How to vacuum a mini split

Pull the line set below 500 microns, prove it holds, then release the charge. Why the micron gauge matters more than the pump.

A vacuum does two jobs. It removes the air left in the line set and indoor coil, and it boils off moisture. Both hurt a system if they stay in. The pump does the pulling, but the micron gauge is how you know it worked.

1Hook up

Connect to the service port on the gas valve. If you can, remove the valve core with a core tool and pull through the tool instead. The Schrader core is the tightest restriction in the path, and pulling around it cuts the time a lot. Put the micron gauge as far from the pump as you can, at the system end, so it reads the system and not the hose.

2Pull it down

Start the pump and open the path to the system. Watch the micron gauge fall. Keep going until it reads below 500 microns. If it stalls well above that, check your hoses and connections before blaming the system.

Tech note. Change the pump oil often. Moisture pulled out of the system ends up in the oil, and wet oil can't pull a deep vacuum.

3Run the decay test

Close the valve between the pump and the system so the pump is isolated, then switch the pump off. Watch the micron gauge for 10 minutes.

  • It rises a little and levels off, well under 1,000. The system is tight and dry. You're done.
  • It rises and levels off higher. There's still moisture. Reopen and pull longer.
  • It keeps climbing and doesn't level off. That's a leak. Go back to the pressure test and soap the flares.

4Release the charge

Put the core back in if you removed it, with the system still under vacuum. Open the liquid valve (the smaller line), then the gas valve, all the way. Remove your hose and replace the valve caps. Then follow the startup steps in the full install guide.

Stop. If your line set is longer than the length the unit is charged for, the extra refrigerant goes in before startup. That needs EPA 608 certification.

Questions people ask me

How long should I vacuum a mini split?

Until the micron gauge says it's done, not a set time. A short single-zone line set with good hoses can get below 500 microns in 20 to 30 minutes. A wet or long system can take much longer.

Can I vacuum a mini split without a micron gauge?

Manifold gauges can't read a deep vacuum, so you'd be guessing. A basic digital micron gauge costs less than most service calls.

Do pre-charged quick-connect line sets need a vacuum?

No. They ship sealed and are designed to connect without one. Follow the kit's manual.
